What We Know
Seiko has launched a new version of their popular vintage-inspired 1965 Heritage Diver, with a dial and color palette chosen by you. Okay, well, maybe not you directly, but through a fan-selection process that Seiko launched last year to mark the 60th anniversary of the original 62MAS diver. Seiko fans were presented with four variants of a watch that would eventually reach production, each inspired by a different tone and color the ocean can take on over the course of a day.
In the end, the winner of last summer’s campaign was this “Daytime Blue” color, which evokes the clear blue waters you’ll find in tropical locales where the water is clear and the sun is shining. Other options included a bright yellow, deep green, and orange-y red. It’s not wholly surprising that the blue dial would have won in a public ballot, but each is compelling, and I’ll be curious to see whether Seiko, having developed and shown off the full range, ever chooses to release any of the other colors.
The watch itself is a familiar one. The HBC011 shares a spec sheet with the enthusiast-favorite (and James’) favorite SPB lineup of dive watches, specifically with the ’20MAS’ generation released in 2024, which brought with it a host of quality-of-life improvements, including a refined case and new movement. That case, which Seiko claims to be 40mm wide, 13mm thick, and 46.6mm lug-to-lug (and which James measured at 40.2mm wide, 13.4mm thick, and 46.6mm lug-to-lug in his Hands-On), is again fitted with Seiko’s 6R55 movement, an automatic option with 72 hours of power reserve, a date (contentiously displayed at 4:30), and an accuracy rating ranging from -15 to +25 seconds a day.
The new watch also shares a dial design — and updated clasp with on-the-fly micro-adjust — with last year’s SPB511, a limited edition that came with a ghost bezel and introduced the wave dial design on which each of the four dial options for this year’s limited edition offering was based.
The new HBC011 will be available starting in October through the usual Seiko channels and is priced at $1,400. The watch is limited, but only loosely so, with an edition of 4,500 pieces worldwide.
What We Think
I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone when I say, on the record, that I’m largely pro-Seiko dive watch. They sit at a real intersection of commercial and enthusiast appeal, and have been a critical paving stone on the path toward watch enthusiasm for a huge number of people. So it’s very cool to see Seiko involving their audience in the process of this watch.
Beyond that, it’s amazing how core this model line has become to Seiko. The 1965 Diver remains one of Seiko’s most effective formats, striking a remarkable balance between vintage inspiration and modern sensibilities. Seiko has also done a really good job of iterating on the model itself, not only with big upgrades like the move from the SPB143 to the SPB451, but also with smaller changes from model to model, like the introduction last year of a new clasp with on-the-fly microadjustment built into the dive extension.
As for the watch itself, in this configuration, with this dial, I like it but don’t love it, which may be almost immaterial in this specific situation. After all, we already know this watch has its fans — it wouldn’t have won a public vote if it didn’t — and I’m never particularly worried about Seiko’s ability to move units. Besides, I think the broader story here is the engagement Seiko was able to create in the process of bringing this watch from concept to reality. They already won when they got people to turn up to the polls; everything else is just gravy.
