Introducing: The Albishorn Marinagraph Classic

What We Know

Swiss brand Albishorn, carving out a niche with “imaginary vintage” designs, just released a simplified version of its regatta chronograph with the Marinagraph Classic. I first covered this complication in my hands-on review two years ago with the Albishorn Maxigraph, the brand’s debut model and a collaboration with Massena LAB. Since then, the regatta chronograph has lived on under Albishorn’s “Water” collection as the Marinagraph, combining the complication with a tide bezel.

Today’s Marinagraph Classic isn’t all that different from the Marinagraph Classic Racing. Visually, the biggest difference is the swap from that colorful aluminum insert tide bezel to a large bidirectional sapphire bezel with more traditional, lumed markings. And yes, there are new dials too. While the sunray-brushed black dial remains, the new dial comes in the form of a white fumé color, with what could have been misconstrued as a shadow in the brand photography actually a subtle dark fade around the edges of the white dial. The black dial sports contrasting silver hands and markers, while the ones on the white fumé dial offer a stark black contrast. On both dials, the ten-minute retrograde regatta countdown scale at 7 o’clock is colored in blue and red, while the chronograph and regatta seconds hands are matched on each dial in either red for the black dial or blue for the white. My favorite feature since the first Maxigraph has been the aperture at 3 o’clock, serving as a running indicator.

On both models, the 39mm steel case features a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.7mm and a thickness of 13mm, while offering an ocean-friendly 100 meters of water resistance. The crown sits at 10 o’clock, while the aluminum monopusher for the regatta chronograph is anodized in red and placed at 9 o’clock. When the pusher is pressed, the chronograph seconds hand starts running, and the countdown hand starts its ten-minute run. When the countdown hand hits zero, it stops, while the chronograph seconds hand keeps on running. Activate the pusher again, and the entire timer stops, and one more press resets the chronograph.

The chronograph mechanism inside is powered by a patented proprietary chronograph caliber ALB01, which remains uniquely specced as an automatic-winding monopusher chronograph with a retrograde 10-minute regatta function, a running indicator, and a power reserve of 64 hours. As I mentioned in my review of the Maxigraph, while the caliber is partially derived from the Valjoux 7750 architecture, it is significantly different, with a monopusher modification, an increased power reserve, and a patented retrograde regatta countdown, all while being slimmed down from 7.9mm to 6.6mm. Also as I noted, the chronograph action feels quite different and more refined than that of many 7750 chronographs out there.

Each of the two variants is limited to 99 unnumbered examples, made throughout the course of three years. Coming with two rubber straps, each Marinagraph is priced at CHF 3,950, while the models on a steel bracelet (and the two rubber straps) is priced at CHF 4,400, available directly through Albishorn. Sales start this Friday, August 14th, at 9 am EDT (3 pm CEST).

What We Think

Albishorn Marinagraph Classic On Map

While the new Marinagraph Classics are not all that different from some of the previous editions, the simplified elements like the bezel and dial options offer a more restrained take on the bold design while still feeling unabashedly Albishorn. I think the strong graphical elements on the dial, like the stylized logo and the triangular applied markers at three, nine, and twelve o’clock, feel significantly more balanced without the additional visual noise of the tide bezel, however useful it may be. While the Maxigraph remains my favorite model in the collection, this one is certainly much more versatile for everyday wear, all while offering a novel complication expressed through just enough bright color.
