One of the first truly functional and commercially successful mechanical alarm wristwatches, the Cricket has been one of Vulcain’s signature models since its introduction in 1947.
Named after the distinctive sound produced by its alarm mechanism, it remains closely associated with the brand’s identity.
For the latest interpretation of this historic model, the new Cricket Titane, Vulcain has adopted Grade 5 titanium not only for the case and dial but also for most of the movement’s key components.
In particular, the structural elements of the new Cricket Calibre V14, including the mainplate and bridges, are manufactured from titanium.
Beyond reducing weight, the material was chosen for its acoustic properties, which help amplify the vibrations generated by the alarm mechanism. To further enhance this effect, both the anvil and the signature Vulcain “V” component are also crafted from titanium.
Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the movement is decorated with Côtes de Genève on the bridges and blued screws.
The train bridge is engraved with the word “Titane”.
Comprising 157 components, the hand-wound calibre operates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) and offers a power reserve of 52 hours. The alarm can sound for approximately 20 seconds.
As with previous Cricket movements, two barrels operate independently. One powers the timekeeping functions, while the second stores the energy required for the alarm.
The movement’s distinctive construction centres on an alarm hammer that strikes an anvil fixed directly to the caseback, causing it to vibrate and amplify the sound.
Operation remains straightforward, with a crown at 3 o’clock used for winding and time-setting, while a pusher at 2 o’clock controls the alarm function.
The 39 mm case frames a matching grey titanium dial featuring a guilloché-style pattern.
White printed markings, nickel-plated hour markers and polished hands complete the display, with blued hour and minute hands contrasting against a black central seconds hand.
Fitted with a black calfskin strap equipped with a quick-change system, the Vulcain Cricket Titane is issued in a limited edition of 100 pieces. It is priced at CHF 6,200, €6,760 or US$7,670. vulcain.ch
