The satellite display continues to push back the boundaries of conventional time reading. This mode, imagined as an alternative to hands, turns hour change into a mechanical show. Since it was founded, Urwerk has made this complication a signature, and through it has rolled out pieces flaunting futuristic-looking architecture. Through its UR-120 Blue Planet, the brand pursues this quest of technical and stylistic exploration.
Its azure-hued PVD steel case center stages sculptural geometrics akin to a spaceship. A real mechanical lab is enclosed inside this extraordinary silhouette. The automatic UR-20.01 caliber boasts an ever-so elaborate construction, combining beryllium-copper, brass, aluminum, ARCAP, titanium, and even LIGA-processed nickel. What’s more, these materials are exalted through fine-watchmaking finishes, along with decorations obtained using blue ALD treatment and dashes of yellow gold PVD. At the heart of this architecture, a carousel, made with 175 components, energizes the accurate rotation of a triple system of planetary workings over the course of 48 hours. Each satellite features an hour indicator that revolves as it runs round the minute tracker. Suddenly, another mechanism is triggered. The satellite splits into two, its two rectangular cubes spread out and form a V shape, an allusion to Spock’s well-known Vulcan salute in Star Trek. Then the two elements spin around their own axes before joining together once again to offer up a new satellite ready to continue its journey through time. Live long and prosper!
