What We Know
TAG Heuer has said this is the year of the chronograph. In reality, for the storied brand from La Chaux-de-Fonds, that means it’s the year of the Monaco. With a series of new releases for 2026, including updated versions of the core Monaco collection with an in-house chronograph movement and updated titanium case, as well as tweaked dial design and, most significantly, the innovative and bar-raising movement tech of the new Evergraf, TAG has leaned into the square-shaped timepiece that debuted back in 1969 and affirmed its position as the brand’s flagship and iconic model.
So for the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco 2026 this weekend, it shouldn’t be a surprise that TAG is unveiling a new limited edition version of the Monaco to mark the occasion. The surprise here is that it isn’t a chronograph. Rather, it’s a time-only jump hour, utilizing the noted Spin Time movement from fellow LVMH property La Fabrique du Temps. It’s called the TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12, and it is certainly a unique and unprecedented interpretation of the mighty Monaco.

Measuring 40 millimeters in diameter, the brushed case is made of grade 5 titanium, with the crown on the right rather than the left, which is now obligatory on the Monaco chronograph. It features a sapphire crystal on both sides, meaning the skeletonized case is effectively transparent outside of the dial architecture at the center.
The design inspiration here is a 12-cylinder combustion motor, and the central stripes of the dial are meant to evoke an engine cover. At the same time, the solo, skeletonized minute hand should suggest the instrument dials of a race car, TAG says. The color palette is minimalist, with black and silver components highlighted with a restrained use of red accents around the black opaline minute track.

Of course, the key element is the use of the Spin Time movement with the rotating, jump-hour indicators shaped like 12 separate engine pistons. As the minute hand makes a full hour’s rotation, the hour indication ‘jumps’ from one piston-shaped marker to the next as the barrel rotates 90 degrees on each to display or hide the numeral.
The movement is anchored by PVD-coated arches at the corners of the case, and a square sapphire bezel on the case front provides a full view of the open-worked dial and the rotating Spin Time mechanism, which is the star of the show here.

The rhodium-plated brushed and sandblasted pistons, with engraved black Arabic numerals, are powered by the TH84-00 movement, developed with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the high horology workshop that’s part of the LVMH group and founded and headed by Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini. The TH84-00 represents TAG’s reinterpretation of the Spin Time movement developed by Navas and Barbasini, as one of the Master Watchmakers’ signature complications.
The limited-edition TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 will be produced in just 50 pieces and will be available beginning in December. It’s priced at an estimated $87,000.
What We Think
After so much talk and new product emphasizing the Monaco’s position as the ultimate TAG Heuer chronograph, it’s a surprise to see a new Monaco time-only watch, even if it is a limited edition of 50 pieces. Still, the Spin Time movement is super cool and a unique interpretation of the jump hour, representing true high horology watchmaking from a storied Swiss atelier.

It’s notable to see more cross-over and cooperation between LVMH’s watchmaking assets and units, and it’s great to see the skills and craftsmanship of La Fabrique du Temps show up in group brands beyond Louis Vuitton, Gérald Genta, and Daniel Roth.
Priced at $87,000, this is also a surprisingly subtle Monaco at first glance. It’s priced in a similar range to the most basic Spin Time models released last year (in precious-metal cases, mind you), which TanTan wrote about in depth. This watch won’t be particularly useful in timing laps around the track, but it will catch the attention of those dedicated to the iconic Monaco and all its iterations. It’s also a fresh showcase of an innovative in-house movement from the group and another reminder that the Monaco is the centerpiece of the TAG lineup and the platform for most of its most innovative iterations.
