What We Know
How good were you in high school physics? If I asked you to demonstrate how light is a wave (while still being a particle), could you? Well, that demonstration (the double-slit experiment) forms the basis for Citizen’s new flagship launch to celebrate 50 years of their Eco-Drive technology. Citizen certainly knows light; after all, their Eco-Drive watches aren’t just powered by the sun. Even faint indoor light will charge an Eco-Drive watch, and the new caliber E036 can run for one full year when fully charged, keeping an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month.

The new “Photon” comes in two versions, with Super Titanium cases featuring either a silver Duratect titanium carbide coating or Duratect DLC and Duratect amber yellow coatings for a two-tone black-and-gold look. The cases measure 39.6mm by 9.9mm, with a solid caseback and a front capped by dual spherical sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating. Each case is paired with an integrated bracelet in matching material (with a micro-adjust built into the clasp). It’s an interesting, sloped case design and super light on the wrist, but it doesn’t lean too closely to other iconic designs. Each caseback features a limited-edition number and a 50th-anniversary motif.

The dial is probably the most eye-catching part of the release. Back in the 1970s, Citizen was looking for an edge as the world faced an energy crisis. Eco-Drive was born out of a search for an innovative, environmentally friendly way to power a watch, stay advanced, and avoid frequent battery changes. They also wanted to make it affordable, in line with the company’s ethos of watches for average citizens.
Just like in the double-slit experiment (which proves that light is a wave, not just a particle), two overlapping dial plates allow light to pass through while adding depth to the dial. The color (blue on one model, gold on the other) comes from a structural color film, made not with ink but by the very microscopic structure that gives the surface its color. that shifts light depending on the angle at which it hits the dial.

The new Citizen Eco-Drive Photon is a limited edition, but because it’s a big anniversary release, Citizen is making a large number of pieces. Each version comes in 5,000 examples, with a retail price of $995 for the standard titanium and $1,195 for the DLC two-tone version.
What We Think

If you stopped by our event at the Citizen flagship store on Wednesday night, you got a chance to see these watches firsthand, so I’m curious about your take if you were there. That said, I also got a bit of a hands-on preview, and this watch is super cool. Dials are massively important for a watch like the Photon—it’s gotta look nice, but it also has to let enough light through to power it. This one wears well (thinner than the measurements suggest) and looks pretty stunning—dial-wise, it’s unlike anything else I can recall seeing. But I’ll save the rest of my take for a hands-on in the near future.
