Hamilton Introduces the American Classic Cushion Mechanical

We’re at an interesting time when it comes to the dialogue in the watch community on vintage inspired watches. Watches that make explicit references to the past are simply less common now than they were a decade ago, or even 4 or 5 years ago. I’ve long believed that a maturing group of collectors who entered the hobby when these watches were all the rage have aged into a point in their collecting journeys when more adventurous and contemporary designs simply have more interest.

But this theory really only applies to what most of us refer to as “midcentury” watches. Think about the earliest dive watches from Rolex, Blancpain, and others, the types of dress and everyday watches worn by Don Draper on Mad Men, and extending through to the earliest bits of 60s and 70s funkiness. That’s the vintage inspired wheelhouse for watch brands seeking to tap into the community’s desire to commune with the past, whether through real or imagined nostalgia. Watches from a century ago are an entirely different category.

Enter the Hamilton American Classic Cushion Mechanical. This is an entirely new collection from the brand that finds them looking to designs from the 1920s for inspiration. Watches from this period never really had a widespread moment of resurgence like divers from the 1960s, but if you’ve spent some time in the hobby you’ve undoubtedly encountered collectors who are deeply into exactly this kind of thing. There are a number of interesting reasons to collect these watches – Hamiltons from this era are American made, for instance. And the designs that were favored in the 1920s and 1930s are true time capsules from the earliest days of wrist watches. I’ve always found it interesting to consider watches from this period as an historical document of what the earliest designers of watches thought watches should be. It’s fascinating to consider them from that perspective.

And in 2026, watches from a century ago have another thing going for them: they are sized in a way that fits in nicely with the current trend for smaller, even “mini” watches. The cushion cased watches seen here might be particularly appealing to modern watch enthusiasts given the inherent wearability and wrist presence that can be achieved with a cushion style case.

The new collection features two case sizes, with six watches total available at launch. The smaller case measures 30mm across, while the larger is 34mm. Both are about 8mm thin thanks to a manually wound movement, the H-42, a rebadged ETA 7001 with 57 hours of power reserve.

The smaller case in 30mm is offered with a white dial and Roman numerals or an alternate dial execution with oversized lumed Arabics. There’s also a PVD gold tone case in this size with the same Arabic dial. In the larger 34mm case, Hamilton offers the same beige Arabic dial seen on the smaller watch (also in gold PVD), with steel versions featuring a black dial with Arabic numerals or a silver sunray dial with very cool Art Deco inspired Arabics. This latter variant also features an engraved case in the style common to this genre of watch in the 1920s.

These new Hamiltons retail for $995 in the uncoated steel cases, and are $1095 in gold PVD. More information can be found on the Hamilton website here.
