What started as a hunt for one of Seiko’s legendary SLQ Kinetic chronographs took an unexpected turn when concerns about servicing a 20-year-old movement led me towards the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph SFJ009P1. Ironically, this was a watch I initially dismissed when it was released. Celebrating 110 years since Seiko’s iconic Laurel—the first wristwatch made in Japan—the SFJ009P1 combines retro-inspired design with cutting-edge 1/100th-second solar chronograph technology. After spending time with it, I’ve gone from indifferent to completely captivated, proving once again that the best watches are often the ones that take us by surprise.
