In 1938, Oris introduced a watch developed for pilots, defined by an oversized crown that allowed the time to be adjusted easily even while wearing gloves.
The design was further distinguished by large Arabic numerals and an unusual pointer date function, with the date indicated by a central hand rather than a window.
Over the decades, this model has become one of the strongest symbols of Oris’ watchmaking heritage.
The latest chapter in this long-running story is the newly launched Big Crown Pointer Date “Bullseye”.
Oris first explored the “Bullseye” dial design in the 1910s, as illustrated by period catalogues featuring pocket watches with a two-tone, concentric layout.
The motif would resurface repeatedly, enjoying particular popularity in the mid-20th century. Oris last revisited the design in 1998, after which it quietly disappeared—until now.
The new model is housed in a 38.00 mm stainless-steel case measuring 12.20 mm in thickness.
The multi-piece construction is defined by the signature oversized crown, a fluted bezel, and a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface.
A screw-down security crown ensures water resistance to 50 metres (165 feet).
The cool grey and black dial is animated by a vivid red date ring and the red-tipped pointer date hand, lending the watch a subtle sporting character.
Hour and minute hands, along with the applied Arabic numerals, are filled with Super-LumiNova C1 and C3 to ensure clear legibility in low-light conditions.
Through the transparent sapphire crystal case back, the Oris Calibre 754 automatic movement is visible, distinguished by its red-enhanced rotor.
Based on the Sellita SW200-1, it operates at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and delivers a power reserve of 38 hours.
The watch is worn on a black strap produced by Swiss sustainable deer leather specialist Cervo Volante.
Secured with a stainless-steel pin buckle, it is equipped with quick-change lug bars for easy strap replacement.
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date “Bullseye” (ref. 754 7779 4061-07 5 19 25) is priced at CHF 1,950 / €1,950. Stay tuned for our hands-on review in few days. oris.ch
