The new Longines Ultra-Chron Classic is directly inspired by the first model of the Ultra-Chron collection launched in 1967: the Ultra-Chron ref. 7827, featuring a 35 mm steel case and the self-winding Longines high-frequency calibre 431 with patented dry lubrication and an instantaneously jumping date.
This 1967 model was followed by the 1968 Ultra-Chron Diver, which inspired the 2022 reissue that we reviewed here.
The 2025 revisiting of the Ultra-Chron Classic retains the signature design of its predecessor, featuring a domed silver sunray dial that reflects light with refined elegance.
Silver-polished indexes and hands preserve its vintage charm, while the trapezoidal date window at 3 o’clock and the improved water resistance to 5 bar (50 metres / 165 feet) add practical touches without altering its timeless character.
While the elegant proportions are preserved, the stainless steel case is now offered in two diameters, 37 mm and 40 mm, both with a thickness of 10.95 mm.
Hidden beneath the screwed-in solid caseback, embossed with the Ultra-Chron logo that also appears on the dial, the high-frequency Longines calibre L836.6 operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz), exactly as the original Ultra-Chron did, and offers a power reserve of 52 hours.
Its silicon balance spring provides magnetic resistance ten times greater than the ISO 764 standard. Lighter and harder than steel, it also reduces inertia and requires no lubricant.
The chronometric precision of the Ultra-Chron is certified by Timelab, an independent testing laboratory in Geneva. Their process goes much further than the classic chronometer certification by COSC, as it tests the complete watch head rather than only the movement. During a 15-day testing period, the watch is subjected to a series of trials at three temperatures (8°C, 23°C and 38°C), confirming that it meets the precision criteria of the ISO 3159:2009 standard.
The watch can be paired with a stainless steel bracelet alternating brushed and polished finishes, equipped with a double safety folding clasp and micro-adjustment, or with a black leather strap with a heritage stainless steel pin buckle.
The new Longines Ultra-Chron Classic, available in 37 mm (ref. L2.537.4.72.2 and L2.537.4.72.6) and 40 mm versions (ref. L2.937.4.72.2 and L2.937.4.72.6), is priced at €3,950 with a metal bracelet or €3,800 with a strap. longines.com
