What We Know

At this year’s Watches and Wonders, Tudor has announced a handful of meaningful updates to one of their most popular references—the Black Bay 58. The new reference builds on the foundation established by the hit 2018 release, with a few key updates focused on accuracy, wearability, and a new five-link bracelet. The BB58 is now Master Chronometer (METAS) certified, bringing tighter accuracy standards and improved magnetic resistance. It’s a meaningful step up, and one that puts the watch more in line with the direction Tudor has been heading across the broader Black Bay line.

The case remains 39mm in stainless steel with a 60-minute unidirectional bezel, but the thickness has been reduced to 11.7mm, down from 11.9mm. The bezel and crown have been redesigned, and the dial text has been reduced to two lines. The hands have been slightly refined with slimmer, more tapered proportions. The dial is now subtly domed and matte finished, and the bezel insert features revised, subtly curved numerals.

Inside is the Manufacture Caliber MT5400-U, a self-winding movement with a silicon hairspring and a 65-hour power reserve. It is now certified by METAS, in addition to its COSC certification, meeting a 0/+5 seconds per day accuracy standard. The certification also covers magnetic resistance, water resistance, and power reserve. The movement runs at 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and features a variable inertia balance with a full traversing bridge.

The other big addition is the option of a five-link bracelet, joining the existing three-link “rivet-style” bracelet and rubber strap. All come with Tudor’s T-fit clasp. That same five-link bracelet is available on the Black Bay GMT, which is also being released today.

The latest Black Bay 58 is available immediately with your choice between a stainless steel five-link bracelet ($5,350), a stainless steel three-link bracelet ($5,225), or a rubber strap ($4,975).

What We Think

At a glance, this looks like the same Black Bay 58 we’ve known for years, yet this is the case where a few small updates can go a long way. The move to METAS felt inevitable, and it’s good to see it land on one of their most popular watches. The slimmer case is a nice bonus, but the real win for me is the five-link bracelet—it changes the feel of the watch, and gives the BB58 a slightly more refined option without losing what makes it work in the first place.
