What We Know

It may not always come as a surprise when Seiko releases a new collaboration, at least in the abstract. Still, it is always exciting to see just who Seiko has chosen to partner with, and what that partnership can turn into. This time, Seiko has paired itself with Tradman’s Bonsai, a Japanese creative collective whose mission is to celebrate and continue exploring the traditional art of Japanese Bonsai through both the creation of Bonsai spaces and the pursuit of collaborations with brands in the street culture, fashion, and art worlds.

The result here is the latest addition to Seiko’s Presage line, Seiko’s dressier alternative to other, more technical watch families like
Prospex. It’s also the line Seiko often uses to celebrate heritage Japanese aesthetics and artistry, making it a perfect canvas for Seiko to honor Bonsai, an art form that involves growing, cultivating, and shaping small-scale trees with rigorous dedication and precision. With this watch, Seiko has evoked Bonsai trees in several ways, most clearly with the introduction of a new dial color and texture.

Inspired by the bark of aging pine trees, the new pattern gently spirals outward from the center of the dial and is paired with a deep green gradient treatment and a dual-curved sapphire crystal with an AR coating on the inside. A 38mm stainless steel case with a fluted bezel and yellow-gold-tone finish houses the dial and the watch’s 6R51 movement, a time-only automatic from Seiko with a 72-hour power reserve and hand-winding capability.

The movement itself is visible through a transparent sapphire exhibition caseback, which is decorated with the Tradman’s Bonsai logo and wordmark in gold (the image covers much of the caseback, so views of the movement are obscured). The Seiko Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai comes fitted with a matching gold-tone multi-link stainless steel bracelet, but you’ll also find a black calfskin leather strap in the box. The strap comes on a gold-tone deployant clasp and is textured with a bark-like effect. The strap liner is, again, pine green and embossed with a pine-needle motif.

The Seiko Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai will be available starting in September 2026. The numbered limited edition of 2000 pieces is priced at $1,350.

What We Think

If, at a quick glance, this watch feels familiar, that’s entirely fair. Elements like the watch’s stainless steel case, fluted bezel, dial furniture, and multi-link bracelet are all parts that have been used in Presage-line watches in the past, but here, rendered in a gold-tone (yellow, not rose) and brought together for the first time, they do seem to create a watch that feels new without being radically out of step with what’s come before.

Beyond that, this watch just has a few things going in its favor, most notably that green and yellow gold are — and always have been — a very good combination. Keeping the green dark was also a good choice. A brighter green would have called more attention to itself, but I think that would have been a mistake. The dark color here tempers the gold and will look far better with the black strap that comes in the box.

One last thing to consider here is the price. $1,350 doesn’t quite put the Seiko Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai at the top of the Presage price range, but it’s not tremendously far off. For a limited edition that brings something novel to the Presage line, I do think it’s fair, but it’s also not hard to imagine a world where it feels like a bridge too far for many. All that said, while this may not be a runaway contender for “Seiko Collab of the Summer” (I think Rowing Blazers probably grabbed that title without too much contest), it’s a worthy addition to their lineup, and I’d love to see more iterations on the new dial design in the not-too-distant future.
