Panerai expands its military-inspired collection with the new Submersible Navy SEALs PAM01738, a robust tool watch engineered for professional diving environments.
Joining the recent Watches & Wonders release, the PAM01089, this new edition blends functions tailored for peak performance with military design codes.
The timepiece is powered by the in-house automatic P.980 calibre, operating at a frequency of 28,800 alternations/hour (4 Hz) with a 3-day power reserve supplied by a single barrel.
Measuring 12½ lignes in diameter and 4.2 mm in thickness, the 23-jewel movement features 177 components, an Incabloc anti-shock device, and a traversing balance bridge engineered to enhance structural stability and chronometric accuracy.
For precise synchronization, the movement incorporates a stop-seconds function that halts the balance wheel when the crown is pulled out, echoing traditional military timekeeping protocols. To ensure long-term reliability across demanding conditions, the movement undergoes testing in six different positions during production.
Designed for deep-sea exploration, the 44 mm brushed stainless steel case provides water resistance to 50 bar, or approximately 500 meters / 1,650 feet, supported by an increased caseback thickness of 15.5 mm to resist extreme pressure.
A unidirectional rotating steel bezel fitted with a black matte ceramic insert allows for the calculation of immersion times while protecting against impacts and scratches.
Ergonomics are further enhanced by a black rubberized crown within the signature crown-protecting lever, ensuring superior grip during operational adjustments even in wet conditions.
Legibility is prioritized through an expanded display scheme on the shaded anthracite dial, which includes a date window at 3 o’clock and a target-inspired small seconds counter at 9 o’clock.
The hour indexes are 20% wider in diameter with a 45% larger Super-LumiNova X2 surface area compared to standard configurations.
In low-light environments, the dial utilizes a dual-color luminous scheme: the hour markers and small seconds hand emit a green glow, while the minute hand and the bezel’s 12 o’clock orientation dot glow in blue to facilitate intuitive time tracking.
Subtle yellow accents, a dedicated ‘Navy SEALs’ decal above 6 o’clock, and an engraved Navy SEALs emblem on the screwed steel caseback complete the aesthetic.
To ensure field readiness, Panerai subjects every completed timepiece to strict internal testing protocols, including water-resistance checks exceeding the rated 50 BAR specification by 25%, thermal shock testing between 70°C and 5°C, and lifecycle stress tests covering thousands of crown lever activations and bezel rotations.
The watch features an interchangeable strap system and comes supplied with both a black rubber strap for underwater activity and a rugged grey canvas strap.
The Panerai Submersible Navy SEALs PAM01738 is delivered in packaging made from recycled paper, complete with a travel pouch, and is priced at €12,100 / US$12,400. panerai.com
